Pet Photography: Greta

This is our dog Greta who turns eleven this year. She enjoys chasing her brother Simon
and making introspective poses for the camera.
She also likes to look very bored when you are watching sports.

Or while she is waiting for dinner.
She loves staring contests.
And the park.
And smelling what other people have brought to eat.
Basically, she just enjoys life.
And loves family.
Greta is the best dog ever.

DIY: Athletic Memorabilia Collage

If you have an athlete at home who collects memorabilia from races and competitions such as race numbers, brochures, timing bands and medals, you know that these things accumulate quickly and take space in junk drawers. Pretty soon they become an unruly mess that is just begging to be thrown out.
An easy way to put them to use in a stylish and colorful way is to create a collage of race numbers like this one below, using inexpensive Ikea frames and some creative taping.
Your athlete might prefer to highlight particular events, which you may display in individual frames like  this assortment below. When placed in random and asymmetrical order, they give an appearance of an art installation and can brighten up a plain room.
Put together in the room where we hang our bikes, this display is a colorful accent to this area and makes use of what would otherwise be junk. What a cheap, simple and creative way to showcase the achievements of your athlete with pride!

Parchment-Baked Bluefish with Roasted Cauliflower

Here is a simple way to bake any fish in parchment or en papillote. The parchment paper pouch creates its own steam that cooks the fish in its own broth, resulting in very soft and moist meat and concentrated flavors.

Baked bluefish with capers, olives, onions and sage. Side of roasted cauliflower.

We begin with a bluefish fillet on top of a parchment sheet.

Some rock salt and capers.
Crush and pit some olives and chop coarsely.
Slice some lemon rounds and onions.
Arrange these ingredients on top of the fish.

Sprinkle some capers on top.
Add a lemon slice.

Drizzle some olive oil.

Doesn’t this look good enough to eat already?
How To Wrap Fish in Parchment Paper
Fold the parchment over the fish.
Fold the other side over.
Fold the corners into an angle towards the center.
Twist the ends and tuck them underneath the fish, creating a sealed pouch.
Set in a glass baking dish.
Bake in a preheated oven at 400C for 25 minutes.
In a separate dish, roast some chopped cauliflower pieces and onion slices drizzled with olive oil.
Each pouch makes one convenient serving.
Cooked to perfection.
This fish will have its flavors intact, and you won’t have a messy baking dish to wash!

Style Elements: Brooklyn

Style Elements is a special section where I feature photos I take of objects that capture my eye in people’s homes or in public spaces.
I love fresh flowers in  homes. It shows that people take the time to bring something new
and pretty into their lives to have even for just a few days.
An antique General Electric fan with a heavy ass base.
A French chandelier with a story.
An Arco Lamp with the backdrop of the antique fan and reflective candle holder.
An Eames-era copper-plated carafe, reportedly from Ebay.
Freshly-bloomed potted orchid with the backdrop of a football game on TV.
What is an Asian home without a buddha? I believe this one is Siddhartha Gautama from India,
who owns one of my favorite quotes: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

Flowers in the bathroom is another thing that makes me smile.
It draws the attention away from everything else and creates a sense of beauty and calm
in your bath and toilet area.
A framed trio of photos from Napa and Sonoma Valley, California.
A vintage school clock bolted to the wall is a good accent for this home’s high ceilings.

As you can see, I love this clock, a treasure found on Ebay.
