Patsy’s Pizzeria

I’ve always thought that Patsy’s was a more easygoing alternative to Grimaldi’s before they moved to their new location. At Patsy’s locations there isn’t such a wait, plus there are family style platters of pastas and appetizers you can order for those who aren’t so pizza-crazy or just want a more balanced meal.

I actually like Patsy’s pizza. The crust stays crispy and the restaurants are roomy, drama-free stops in the city for reliable New York brick oven pizza and above average pasta.

Sausage, mushroom and black olives on a large pie.

Krystal’s Cafe 81

We had already come from a tapas dinner nearby and then more drinks at a bar when we passed by Krystal’s Cafe 81 and found sisig on their menu. If you’re not Pinoy or a Filipinophile (yet), sisig is a popular drinking dish made with pork face and ear skin and cartilage. It is usually served in a sizzling cast iron plate along with some San Miguel Beer, which incidentally Krystal’s also serves to those familiar with the magic of SMB.

Sizzling sisig topped with egg.

Krystal’s sisig was crunchy and delicious, a little meatier than the usual sisig, but it still brings me back to drunken evenings at Treehouse, long ago and oh so very far away…. Continue reading

Mamiko Otsubo’s First Solo Show in New York

Mamiko Otsubo is a good friend’s sister whose artistic journey I’ve followed since she was still completing her MFA in Yale.  How happy were we to learn that she was going to have her first solo show in New York? The Horton Gallery is exhibiting Mamiko’s art from April 5th through May 5th.  Here are some photos of the opening day that I took to capture the moment.

A shot from outside the gallery. Continue reading

Alternative Views: DUMBO, Brooklyn

Forget the Statue of Liberty,  The Empire State Building, or the freaking Sex and The City Tour. There’s a reason New Yorkers hardly grace any of those attractions. When you come to New York you must visit DUMBO, a formerly industrial part of the city by the water that has in the past twenty years been reclaimed as prime real estate.
Under the Brooklyn Bridge

DUMBO is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, but is actually a great spot to view both the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. This area used to be a ferry port and housed several factories before these were shut down and artists took residence, naming it so as an attempt to dissuade developers from discovering the beauty of this area. Today the industrial era buildings and structures are side by side with luxury condominiums. You can’t argue with progress. Continue reading

Favorite Things: Shabu-Tatsu’s Green Tea Ice Cream

Green tea ice cream? I know. They probably don’t even make it there, but I’ve never found anything close to the green tea ice cream they serve at Shabu-Tatsu. It has a particular bite on your tongue that delivers the bitter tea taste like  no other green tea ice cream I’ve tried. I would go back just for the ice cream if only they didn’t have a minimum order!

I did try to figure out where they get their ice cream, and a waiter told me the brand was Mister Green Tea. I’ve tried Mister Green Tea and it’s good, but still nothing like Shabu-Tatsu’s, so the next time I was there I told the waiter that Mister Green Tea doesn’t taste like their ice cream.

He said, “Oh, really?” and I proceeded to say that maybe the company delivers them a restaurant-grade batch? I thought that was a good explanation.

He answered, “I don’t know, but if you find out where we get it, can you let me know? I really like it too.”

Stumped. I love the stuff. Maybe it’s a blessing that the wholesale blend is not available in stores.
